EFFECTS OF WASTE DISCHARGES ON WATER QUALITY OF THE SNAKE RIVER AND ROCK CREEK, TWIN FALLS AREA, IDAHO. 1971

Description:

Comprehensive water quality investigations in the Snake River Basin, Twin Falls Area (17040212) were conducted from November 2 to 17, 1971. Studies included an evaluation of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. Subsequently, stream surveys were conducted on the Snake River, from upstream of Perrine Coulee to downstream from Rock Creek, and on a portion of Rock Creek. During this study, disinfection of effluent from the Twin Falls Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plan was inadequate. Rock Creek is severely degraded by industrial wastewater discharges between RM 12.4 and the mouth (BOD level, total- and fecal-coliform bacteria, dissolved oxygen). The following discharges into Rock Creek violated Idaho water quality standards: Colonial Concrete, Inc., discharge of inorganic solids; the Amalgamated Sugar Company, discharge of BOD, suspended solids, and coliform bacteria; Idaho Frozen Foods, Inc., discharge of BOD, COD, suspended solids, oil, grease, and coliform bacteria; and Independent Meat Company, discharge of BOD and coliform bacteria. The inflow of Rock Creek increased the total-coliform bacterial density in the Snake River by 20 times. 1973.
